Gut Instinct

  Where Microbes Meet Meaning

A Documentary-Podcast Series by M. Sean Kaminsky

Background

Gut Instinct: The Documentary will dive deep into a profound re-examination of how toxins like glyphosate may be silently destroying our microbiome, the very foundation of health. Emerging research suggests this damage may be contributing to a wide range of chronic illnesses, disrupting not only gut health but also immunity, mood, and even neurological function. Our goal is to raise awareness and inspire those in positions of power to implement meaningful policy change.

Gut Instinct: The Podcast explores the powerful intersection of microbiome science, mental health, and spiritual healing. Each episode dives beneath the surface of digestion to uncover how our inner terrain shapes emotion, intuition, and resilience. Each episode will feature a maverick individual who followed their gut instinct toward a healthier, more conscious way of being. This is a space for remembering what your body has always known.

Our Chronic Health Epidemic

Today more than half 51.8% of American adults are diagnosed with at least 1 chronic disease and an estimated 94% have metabolic disorder, while 42% of adults in the U.S. are obese.

  • Currently, the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases lists over 55,000 unique medical disorders.
  • This approach has led to the development of over 40,000 internationally approved prescription drugs.
  • These drugs fuel a global pharmaceutical industry worth trillions of dollars in profits.

Despite these advances, chronic diseases continue to rise.

This prompts a critical question: Is there a better way to approach wellness?

Modern Science Evolves a New Understanding of Health

Gut Instinct will explore a new way of understanding health—one that focuses less on fighting individual symptoms and more on nurturing the body’s internal environment. Some doctors describe it like this: if you see a sick fish, you could try to treat the fish…or you could clean the tank.

But what happens when the tank is being steadily poisoned? Glyphosate and other pesticides have infiltrated our food, water, and soil, contaminating the very systems that support life. Gut Instinct investigates how this disruption to our internal ecosystems may be fueling today’s epidemic of chronic illness and asks what it will take to restore balance and health from the inside out.

The Growing Importance of Gut Health

Once considered simply a digestive system, the gut is now recognized as a central player in everything from immune resilience to mental clarity. Research continues to reveal how a diverse, balanced microbiome supports hormone regulation, brain function, and even emotional stability. At the same time, rising rates of chronic illness and autoimmune disorders are increasingly being linked to disruptions in this inner ecosystem. As scientists uncover the far-reaching influence of gut microbes, prioritizing gut health is becoming not just a wellness trend, but a vital foundation for preventing disease and enhancing overall vitality.

Interviews with Top Experts

Gut Instinct: The Documentary will be a comprehensive exploration into the widespread impact of modern industrial agricultural chemicals on the human microbiome. Through in-depth interviews with leading doctors, researchers, and experts in the field, the film explores how these chemicals are not only degrading our soil but also disrupting the internal ecosystems that govern our immunity, metabolism, and mental health. Mounting evidence links this microbial disruption to the rise in chronic diseases, autoimmune conditions, and increased vulnerability to infection. Understanding and protecting the microbiome may be the most urgent and overlooked path to preventing illness and reshaping the future of medicine. We must confront this invisible threat before the damage becomes irreversible.

Documentary Impact

Our goal is to reimagine health with a bold vision: take massive action to remove toxins that are damaging our microbiome from the food supply. Several countries including Germany, Vietnam, and the entire Gulf Cooperation Council have already restricted or are planning to restrict the use of glyphosate. France, Belgium, and the Netherlands have banned its use in household settings, and Germany planned a total phase-out by the end of 2023 before stalling under EU-wide rules. In stark contrast, the United States has no such plan in place.

Meanwhile, the U.S. approves a significantly higher number of chemicals for use in food and consumer products than many other countries, largely due to a permissive regulatory framework and a system that allows companies to self-certify additives as “Generally Recognized as Safe” without independent oversight. Over 10,000 food additives are allowed in the U.S.—far more than the approximately 400 approved in the European Union. Crucially, most of these chemicals have never been tested for their impact on the gut microbiome.

Gut health is not a side issue, it’s the foundation of human health. Scientists are increasingly discovering that disruptions in the microbiome can ripple outward, leading to chronic inflammation, weakened immunity, and a wide array of diseases, from allergies to neurological disorders.

Documentary Mission

Gut Instinct will seek to inspire policymakers, practitioners, and the public to take meaningful action to eliminate harmful pesticides and chemicals from our environment and our food system. Our goal is for this film and the podcast series to become part of the rising tide calling for a future where thriving, not just surviving, becomes our standard of health.

Director/Host

M. Sean Kaminsky is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who brings powerful stories to life, shedding light on some of today’s most critical global issues. His projects have aired on networks like HBO, PBS, MTV/LOGO, and Sundance Channel, and have been screened at the Tate Modern museum in London. His debut feature, Open Sesame: The Story of Seeds, garnered national and international distribution, with screenings in theaters across the U.S. and a broadcast on PBS.

Sean’s lifelong passion for health led him to study Ayurveda under David Frawley and herbal medicine at the East West School of Herbology. The concept for Gut Instincts emerged while filming Open Sesame and connecting with pioneers in the fermentation movement. His passion for gut health and the microbiome became deeply personal after facing challenges stemming from Lyme disease. His goal with “Gut Instinct” is to inspire a transformative shift in how we understand and approach health, focusing on the vital role of the body’s internal environment and the untapped potential of the human microbiome.

Sean holds an M.A. in Media and Communication from the European Graduate School and a B.A. in Film & Television from the University of British Columbia. His middle name, “Sean,” became a nickname while living in a vibrant San Francisco artist community, where four other Michaels shared the space.
